"Other" Texas Relays

Well, I've seen quite a few of y'all at another new Texas Relay ***ahem***ragnar***ahem*** and I think we can say TIR rocked Ragnar! Especially with the Texas theme and the gyms for sleeping/showering and the welcoming towns. So, those of you who did Ragnar last year probably know that they've moved it from October 09 to March 19-20, 2010...right next to TIR. Boo. Some of you teams might be hard core and be able to do both, but if you're a team made of normal humans, I say boycott Ragnar and support TIR!

Forum: Everything else!

Idea for 2010 TIR

I want to start by saying TIR 2009 was awesome. It was our first but hopefully not our last.

I'm sure Jay loses sleep trying to make each year's relay bigger and better than the last. Here is a race that may provide some "food for thought".

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=garber/090326

The Krispy Kreme Challenge requires consumption of a dozen donuts in the middle of a four mile race. How about each team consuming 203.2 donuts. Half would be consumed during the prologue and the other half during leg 40. The clock stops after the last bite is taken. Just a thought.

Forum: Everything else!

Lessons Learned

First of all, I would like to say how much fun our team had. Most of my team was skeptical of the race and its mileage requirements, but every one of them have told me how great a time it was. However, it was a learning process. Some of our lessons learned for next time are:

1. Bring the map of your leg. Because of the high winds, the signs were blown off the cones and we had four runners go off course. The worst being leg 3 where our runner (myself) made an early right turn and ran 1.5 miles down 355 just after mile 3 before realizing that all the footprints had completely disappeared. Most of the other mix ups were minor and fixed shortly after getting sidetracked, but the other notable diversion was on leg 37, which took our runner off into a not-so friendly part of Houston. It took a police officer to point him in the right direction. I realize that it is not possible to have volunteers at EVERY turn for 36 hours, but maybe some better markings and carrying the map of the leg would be smart.

2. Bring a pad or a cot. I was under the impression that there would be cots at the gyms (Gonzales and Wallis).

3. gotta run...more to come!

Forum: Everything else!

The mixed team debate will go on, and I think we need to debate a couple of other issues, but I would like to hear from our revered RD's on a really important topic: When Can We Register For Next Year?
Rick Johnson
Sole Survivors

Forum: Everything else!

Mixed Teams Female Percentage

TIR rules say "Mixed teams require 3 or more women, but teams with fewer women can still register in the mens category".
Relays I've seen require a minimum of 50% female participants for mixed teams.
For example:
Hood to Coast minimum 50% female
Cascade Lakes Relay minimum 50% female
Ragnar Relay series minimum 50% female
Wild West relay minimum 50% female
Green Mountain Relay minimum 50% female
Beach To Bay 3 male, 3 female

Not only is it physiologically unfair for teams with 9/3 rations to compete with teams having 6/6 ratios, I think there becomes a tendency to discriminate against female runners if it is not required to have equal numbers.

Jay and I discussed this pre race and I feel mixed teams should be required to have 50% minimum female members. You can still customize legs, but, not discriminate against females being on the teams.
I'm interested in what others think.

Forum: Everything else!

Tagging -- You've been Rogued

Thanks to everyone who was part of our tagging fun. In the "Come and Take it" spirit combined with our team spirit and generally mischievous nature, we "Rogued" many other team vehicles by marking our team crown logo on the windows. It was a friendly gesture that led to us meeting many other teams along the race course as they figured out who we were and what it even meant to "be Rogued!"

We were especially impressed with the retaliatory efforts of teams. Mickey's P2 Pace Makers were the first to bust us so I proudly ran my legs with a yellow P2 tattoo on my arm as well as on our vans. The Sun City Striders were good sports once they figured out it wasn't age discrimination. We loved getting Appled by the Return of the Apples and Chupacabra'd by the Running Chupacabras, and the taunting from our friends Joey and Rachel Trimeyer's Team No Big Deal. But, the prize goes to Going Commando.

Juan Longoria and his team from Keller got us Commando Style! Imagine our surprise at the post-race celebration to find that those who Go Commando had decorated our van with their unnecessary undergarments! You guys will be happy to know they stayed on the van for the 2.5 drive to Austin.

Thanks to everyone for being such great sports. We are already looking forward to next year. If you're ever in Austin, come run with us! -- the Rogue Rogues

Forum: Everything else!
